Maya Janine D’Costa was born and raised in Mumbai, India. They received their bachelors in design from the Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology in Bangalore, India.
They are now based out of Chicago, USA, where they are pursuing their MFA from the University of Chicago.

Maya is currently working with materials such as clay, wood, color and textile. Intuitively making with these materials lead them to absurd haptic forms. Maya is invested in presenting these processes and objects to viewers. Viewers have recounted meanings associated with the body, architecture, sensuality and care.
Maya cares about people, expression and the environment.  As is seen in projects such as ‘Mamsa Santhe’, ‘Drawings from an(other) space’ and ‘At Lake’, amongst others.

They are curious about their shift over the last year from an engagement with other people in public space, and two dimensional works, to the engagement with the self, and three dimensional works in the studio. Maya has a sense that the two are not seperate.
